I've been to the Moth Club a fair bit over the years but it's been a while. Last night I was reminded of it's magic when I went to see Spirit Blue supporting Lolina for Bad Vibrations.
It was a rainy Sunday night and after a weekend of Storm Darragh's tedious travel disruptions I had to stop myself from being a loser and staying at home. No regrets! I only just discovered Spirit Blue and there's not too much of their music out yet so I was looking forward to hearing more. To me it sounds something like Moin crossed with HTRK. The picked bass tone & low, subdued vocals, driven by tastefully restrained drums & shimmering guitars seems to be their signature. The sound was perfectly presented through the Moth Clubs PA (kudos to the engineer!) & the atmosphere of the unique club carried it well. I was happy to be amongst a busy crowd mesmerised by the music & well curated line up.
Great Area played a cool set singing to a projected back drop of city scapes, delivering the message with a deliberate seriousness. No messing around. RIP Magic excited the industrial fan in me. A hybrid of live & sampled beats & soulful vocal samples over distorted bass and half sung half spoken live vocals.
Lolina performed on a sofa on stage. Trippy pitch shifted vocals alongside atonal lo-fi hip hop beats something like Erotica era Madonna meets Odd Future. One of Lolina's previous projects was Hype Willams so this makes sense. A suitably trippy & brilliant end to the night.
Please god of planning development can you let the Moth Club be!
